There are three types of weightlifting
- Olympic weightlifting
- Power lifting
- Bodybuilding.
Bodybuilding is done mostly with machines, in gyms like Pinnacle, Bally. The ultimate goal for bodybuilders is to have huge muscles. Not specifically useful for most sport. Just for appearance.
Power lifting is consist of three exercises – Bench Press, Back Squat and Dead Lift. The ultimate goal for power lifter is to lift heavier weight in each exercise. Power lifters develop mostly slow twitch fibers in their muscles, hence power lifters are extremely strong but lacking speed, quickness and explosiveness.
Olympic weightlifting develops strength as well as quickness, explosiveness and speed. Very often we make comparison between B-52 bomber and F-16 jet fighter, where B-52 are the Power lifters and the F-16 are the Olympic lifters. The B-52 (Power lifter) is very powerful but slow and less maneuverable compare to the F-16 (Olympic lifter) – strong, fast, very maneuverable.
Only the Olympic lifting is part of the Olympics. Power lifting and Bodybuilding are not.
Olympic weightlifting is very closely monitored by WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) and USADA (US Anti Doping Agency) especially for use of steroids and other banned substances. Power lifting and Bodybuilding are not.

Kris Pavlov takes home the Gold medal in the 69K (152lb)Mens weight class at the Tommy Kono 2009 Open with a 85K (187lbs) Snatch and 115K (253 lbs) Clean/Jerk for a total of 200K (440lbs)
